1. Tuition is money that students have to pay to take classes at a school.

I have a part-time job to pay for my tuition for this year.

2. To subsidize something means to pay part of the cost of it for someone.

The construction company subsidizes meals for its workers.

She went to a progressive high school where students are allowed to choose which subjects they want to study.

Yeah. I think it’s fair to say that they need more training.

1. If something is disproportionately something, it has an unfair difference in relation to other things.

I kept track of how much I spend on food, shopping, and commute for a month. I found out that the amount I spent on food was disproportionately high.

2. Something is a tough call when it’s a hard decision to make.

I’m still really unsure if I should buy a house or just keep renting an apartment. It’s a tough call.

My son’s really bright. He’s at the top of his class every year. I’m really proud of him!

Why on earth did she get a dog? She’s always at work or out partying. There’s no way she’ll be able to take care of him properly!

1. To weigh the pros and cons means to consider the good and bad parts of something.

weighed the pros and cons and decided not to take the job. The pay is better, but the daily 2-hour commute wouldn’t be worth it.

2. To broaden one’s horizons means to learn new things and gain new experiences.

Studying in a foreign country will broaden your horizons.

Floppy disks are basically extinct. I haven’t seen one in years!

I know. But, the sooner you get your tooth checked, the better. It might be something serious.

Singers vs. Artists, Music Royalties, Fast Fashion

1. To lip sync means to silently move your mouth and pretend to sing along to a recorded song.

Singers sometimes lip sync when they’re sick.

2. Someone is a phony when he/she isn’t what he/she pretends to be.

He claims he’s a doctor, but he’s just a phony. He never even went to medical school!

Self-driving cars could be a boon or a bane. They could give people more free time, but they could also malfunction and hurt people.

You’ve got to be kidding! That’s her best one yet!

1. If something has the potential to lead to more and more problems, then it’s a slippery slope.

If you stop going to the gym, you’ll just sit at home. That might cause you to start snacking again, and then you’ll gain back all the weight you lost! It’s a slippery slope.

2. To comply with something means to follow what you have been ordered to do.

She was fired because she didn’t comply with the company’s attendance policy.

Some hotels nickel and dime guests by charging extra fees for toiletries used during their stay.

I see nothing wrong with taking pictures. It’s one way to document great experiences!

1. A fad refers to a trend that suddenly gains popularity but loses it just as fast.

I bought this hat because it was a fad at the time, but now it’s out of style.

2. Use They don’t make them like they used to. to say that certain products have declined in quality.

I dropped my old phone many times with no problem, but my new phone broke the first time I dropped it! They don’t make them like they used to.

I’ve had these sunglasses for eight years and they still look brand new. They’re obviously made to last!

I thought the new movie was awesome, but apparently, it’s not doing so well at the box office.

Yeah, you just don’t know with movies. Some do well, some don’t. It’s a crapshoot.

1. Use the phrase To do something or not to do something: That is the question. when you’re trying to decide between two difficult choices.

To study abroad or not to study abroad: That is the question. What do you think I should do?

2. When a fee is calculated on a sliding scale, it changes depending on what a person can afford.

Don’t worry, that fee is for adults. They charge on a sliding scale, so you should be able to get in for only $10 or so.

Leo is facing a dilemma. He’s moving to a smaller apartment in the city next month. He wants to take his dog with him, of course, but he’s not sure if his dog will be happy in such a tiny apartment.

Yeah. He really is one of the best actors of his generation, but I’m of the opinion that he should quit acting and get serious help for his problem.

Fake Fashion

1. Counterfeit describes something that is fake but was made to trick people into thinking it’s the real thing.

Apparently, she wasn’t able to go to the concert last night because the tickets she bought were counterfeit.

2. To land in jail means to end up being in prison.

Be careful. Singapore has strict laws. You don’t want to land in jail because you unknowingly broke one.

Well, it’s probably just a knock-off. She isn’t the kind to spend so much money on a bag anyway.

an imitation of a popular product sold for a cheaper price

Sometimes you want to explain what is really happening.

She’s trying to be positive about it, but in reality, she’s still really upset. I saw her crying about it this morning.

Nightlife, New Forms of Art and Returning Old Treasures

1. Something that effectively kills something is the indirect reason for its end.

Online shopping has effectively killed small clothing stores in my city.

2. Rowdy is used to describe something or someone that’s loud, noisy, or disorderly.

I wasn’t able to sleep again because of our rowdy neighbors last night!

Luis earned the title of “Mr. Behind Time” because he’s always late.

I don’t think that’s the way to go. Resigning is not the solution. You should just ask your boss for advice.

1.  Legitimate is used to describe something that is considered real, true, or accepted (as opposed to fake or unaccepted).

My mother doesn’t consider online classes to be legitimate college classes.

2. To weigh in on something means to give an opinion or a statement on a topic.

None of the staff weighed in on the new office policy when it was announced. Everyone just silently listened.

My favorite rock band has a huge following on social media. Their video channel has around 20 million subscribers.

No, as a matter of fact, he seemed really happy today.

1. Country/Place of origin refers to where a thing originally came from.

I thought my new shoes came from Australia, but when I checked the box, the country of origin was actually China!

2. Rightful describes something appropriate or proper.

I don’t think the zoo is the rightful place for wild animals.

Thieves looted thousands of paintings, books, and other treasures from abandoned museums during the war.

Well, it’s only fair. They shouldn’t have fought in the middle of the game.

Internet Addiction,Personal Information, Self-Driving Cars, Renewable Energy

1. To miss out on something means to lose an opportunity to do or have something

I was sick. I’m sorry that I missed out on all the fun!

2. To unplug means to stop using all electronic devices.

You will. It’s time for you to unplug!

They fought a lot because of Brad’s excessive drinking. Jen said he got drunk almost every night.

That’s good! I know some people think it’s weird, but I see no issue with exes being friends again.

1. Fossil fuels are natural fuels such as gas, coal, and oil that are formed from the remains of plants and animals.

There are rich deposits of fossil fuels in China, the US, and Russia.

2. To dwindle is to gradually become smaller or fewer in number until nothing is left.

When the forests were cleared to make way for houses, the bear population began to dwindle.

The solar panels harness the sun’s power to provide electricity to hundreds of homes.

Well, to put it in perspective, this is the first time that we aren’t #1! That’s actually great news – we’re going in the right direction.

1. To warm up to the idea of something means to begin to like or be interested in a concept.

I was against it at first, but I’m slowly warming up to the idea of working abroad.

2. To test the waters means to find out what something would be like before actually doing it.

Sell a few baked goods to your friends and test the waters first before you quit your job and open a bakeshop.

The autonomous robot folded the laundry, cleaned the floor, and watered the plants without any human assistance or supervision.

Definitely not! They’ll just mess everything up. I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them.

1. Sensitive information is confidential information that can cause harm to a person or organization if it is leaked or otherwise shared.

I think it’s a bit crazy, but my sister considers even her birthday to be sensitive information! Maybe she uses it as her password…

2. Everybody and their brother refers to a large number or majority of people.

I’m so embarrassed. I tripped and fell down the stairs in front of everybody and their brother!

Stop spying on the neighbors! What they do inside their own home is none of your business!

Yeah, he told me! I normally don’t believe stuff like that, but oddly enough, I believe him. I don’t see why he would lie about it.

AI and Automation and review

1. To enrich one’s life means to improve one’s life by adding value to it.

Self-help books enrich my life.

2. To boost productivity means to increase output.

A 10 minute-nap can boost productivity for some people. Not for me, though. I need at least 30 minutes!

He’s indispensable to our team. We can’t win without him.

Well, I’m neither for nor against it. I can see both sides of the issue.

Preppers, DNA Testing, and Drones

1. If someone is paranoid, he/she exhibits extreme and irrational fear.

Ever since I saw that accident three years ago, I’ve been paranoid about crossing the street.

2. A worst-case scenario is the worst possible thing that could happen.

It probably won’t happen, but you should always prepare for a worst-case scenario just in case.

My friend watches the news about the major problems all across the world and talks about how doomsday is near, but I don’t think the end of the world is coming.

Yeah. He’s friendly and intelligent. Not to mention good-looking too! His girlfriend’s really lucky.

1. Early detection of something means that something has been discovered in advance or in the very beginning stages.

The early detection of my daughter’s skin cancer meant that she didn’t have to take harsh drugs. She was very lucky that the doctor spotted it at that stage.

2. If something is used against someone, it’s used to harm or negatively affect a person.

The CCTV footage of the crime can be used against the suspect.

After tracing my ancestry, I discovered that I’m a descendant of King Henry VIII. Isn’t that amazing?

Shh! For the time being, let’s just be quiet about it.

1. A close call is used to describe an incident that almost happened but didn’t.

Phew! That was a close call!

2. We say that something is unregulated when it is not monitored or controlled.

Yeah. Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea to let employees have unregulated breaks like that.

A civilian got hurt when the police were chasing the robber down the street.

Yeah. In light of the situation, we’ve decided to ask employees to lock all personal items in their desks when they go home each day.
