Gift-Giving

A token of one’s appreciation is something that is given to a person to say thank you.

I know! That’s why we should give the members a token of our appreciation for their hard work.

To show one’s gratitude means to express appreciation for something that someone has done.

You can treat them to dinner to show your gratitude.

To put a lot of thought into something means to think carefully about it.

Give her something unique. She’ll appreciate that you put a lot of thought into your gift.

Japanese-Style Holidays

1. Something is commercialized when businesses take advantage of it to earn money.

Valentine’s Day is one of the most commercialized holidays around the world.

2. Something is secular when it’s not based on religion.

Children’s Day is a secular holiday that was made to celebrate children and thank their mothers.

3. If an event is all about something, that thing is the most important part of the event.

Christmas in Japan is different from other countries—it’s all about eating fried chicken and cake!
